In comparison, Age of Wonders IV has five story realms in its base game, and two announced in its DLCs- one for Empire and Ashes, and one for Eldritch Realms. And although Planetfall used RNG maps combined with scripting for its campaign, the base game still managed 13 unique maps (2 for each race & 1 finale), and every DLC added another 2 maps, so Planetfall ended up with 19 unique maps. So with all its DLC Age of Wonders III ended up with 22 unique campaign maps. I haven't played Age of Wonders III and Planetfall's campaigns yet so I can't comment too much on their content (although I have played the rest), but Age of Wonders III had 16 unique maps as I understand it in its base game (8 for the Elven Court and 8 for the Commonwealth, with 2 of these maps for each side being branching non-canon routes), and Golden Realms and Eternal Lords added another 2 campaigns (with 3 unique maps each). And many of these were scripted, with custom quests, a lot of dialogue and small easter eggs, as well as voiced introductions and conclusions. And some of these did have minor scripts, and many had dialogues within the missions.Īge of Wonders II Shadow Magic broke the campaign down based on characters and had: 3 Symon (Tutorial), 3 Julia, 3 Ke-Nan (Nomads), 3 Meandor, 3 O'Neron (Syron) & 1 Finale for a total of 16 unique missions. Granted, there was no scripting in these missions, but each one had unique starting and finishing text based on who you were (Cult/Keepers)Īge of Wonders II had: 2 Cosmos (Tutorial & Finale), 3 Fire, 3 Water, 3 Life, 3 Air, 3 Earth and 3 Death Missions, for a total of 20 unique maps overall, with voice introductions and conclusions. This gave a total of almost 35 unique maps (I think there were actually 34 since the Highmen and Undead shared a map). For comparison:Īge of Wonders I had: 3 Halfling Missions, 4 Dwarf Missions, 4 Elf Missions, 4 Lizardmen Missions, 4 Highmen Missions, 4 Undead Missions, 3 Goblin Missions, 4 Orc Missions, 4 Dark Elf Missions & 1 Finale Mission (with a different starting positions based on who you were). I personally think its a real pity we've gone to five RNG 'story realms' instead of the normal campaign found in prior titles. I don't mean this as a slight against the writing in AoW3 or the quality of the campaign in AoW3, but rather as praise for how it turned out in Planetfall.īased on the Dev Diaries, I expect that they have improved on the formula of Planetfall, and although it sounds like the story campaign is shorter in AoW4 than it was in Planetfall, I will reserve judgement as to whether it actually is that (and whether it is for better or worse) until I can make a determination from personal experience. And my characters in Planetfall felt no less like protagonists of a narrative than Sundren did in AoW3. The campaign was still a cohesive and engaging narrative, but it felt like it was tailored more to me personally rather than the protagonist being a premade character that I otherwise had no stake in, the protagonist was my character. They already did this to a somewhat lesser degree with Planetfall, and it turned out great in my personal opinion. If anything, the devs have gone through tremendous efforts to make the campaign story feel like it's "your story" as much as possible. Click to expand. This is a rather strange conclusion to come to.
